How many sessions does it take to complete an EMDR target?

I’ve outlined the number of sessions my clients take to complete targets and separated them into percentages. What does it mean to “complete a target?” It means that when you think back on an upsetting memory, it has minimal - if not zero - energy! It feels like it happened long ago and that it’s a part of your past, but not your present. Most of my client’s targets include memories from ongoing childhood sexual/physical/emotional abuse.

The number of sessions to complete a target is variable - but here’s what my numbers say!

One Session: 31%

Two Sessions: 46%

Three Sessions: 16%

Four Sessions: 2%

Five Sessions: 2%

Six Sessions: 3%

As you can see, most people complete a target within two sessions.

EMDR Therapy Sessions to Meet Treatment Goals

How Many Sessions Does It Take for your clients to meet their treatment goals?

In your first session with me, we will discuss your goals for treatment and together we’ll create your Master Treatment Plan. Because some clients have more complex cases than others, the number of sessions to reach treatment goals has ranged from 5 sessions to 63 sessions.

The current average number of sessions to meet treatment goals is 24 sessions.

Extra Preparation for EMDR

How Many people need extra preparation for EMDR?

Before we start tackling the memories that you can’t seem to escape, we have to get you ready! Some clients only need one session of preparation for EMDR. Others require several more.

Currently, 62% of clients move to target processing (desensitization) after one preparation session.

This means that 38% of clients require several more sessions. These clients typically dissociate more than the average person and we need to do a little more work to get ready.
